BEN SEGAL - GUITAR TEACHER
|
Ben's involvement with music, and the guitar, began in the mid-60's, at the height of the 'pyschedelic' music era.
Citing Jimi Hendrix as one of his first major influences, he soon developed a hunger to go deeper into the instrument, and set about
studying music theory and jazz composition at Vanier College in Montreal.
A versatile and accomplished guitarist, bassist, and teacher,
Ben is well-versed in all styles of music, and his many years of playing experience provide him with the knowledge
to share various techniques and creative approaches with his students, the objective being to get the student to connect
to the instrument immediately, and then present them with the areas of study necessary to develop the skills they need
in order to play at the maximum of their capacities.
Ben's musical history spans four decades, events too numerous to
mention here, but some of the highlights would certainly be; playing with his own rock group, Nirvana, (no, not the one with Kurt Cobain!),
at Man and His World in Montreal in 1968; involvement with a 'free form', experimental band, 1+1+1=1, through the 70's; playing guitar
and bass with a progressive jazz quartet, 'Conjonction', in the 80’s, including performances at music festivals throughout Quebec;
composing and recording an album of 'New Age' music, "Elysian Fields", by the group, 'Sativa', which was released in 1991 by the
new age music label, "Chacra Alternative Music", and has been aired throughout the world; the release of another album in 1999,
"Sound Asleep", a musical project that involved creating music specifically designed to help infants to fall asleep; and performances
with reggae bands and various other groups for many years in many different locales. Having just re-located to Hull from Montreal in
July of this year, Ben has just begun a teaching assignment at Sonart, and is also currently playing bass in a blues band based in Ottawa.
